Cornelia Parker: Murano Illumina Il Mondo

Procuratie Vecchie Piazza San Marco, Venezia

24 November 2023–29 February 2024

Murano Illumina Il Mondo is the project promoted by The Venice Glass Week and the Municipality of Venice which, for the first time ever, brings an exhibition project to Piazza San Marco and puts the spotlight on Murano glass and its future.

From 24 November to 29 February, twelve chandeliers resulting from the collaboration between internationally renowned artists and nine of the most prestigious Murano furnaces will be lit every evening to enchant citizens and tourists. These original masterpieces rigorously created for the occassion thus transform Piazza San Marca into the setting for a truly unique public art intervention.

Cornelia Parker was inspired by the six-armed chandelier depicted in Jan van Eyck's famous 1434 painting, The Arnolfini Portrait and, to replicate it, she took advantage of a double collaboration. The Salviati furnace created the central body in blown glass, while Nicola Moretti translated the openwork and complex contours of the arms into three dimensions thanks to a water laser cut on glass fusion.
